NYC Hosts the Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy (ECWD)

Save the Date!

We are pleased to announce that the 2017 Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy (ECWD) will be held this June 09-11, 2017 at Fordham University Lincoln Center in New York City in partnership with NYC Network of Worker Cooperatives.  Please save the date and circulate widely!

About the Conference

The ECWD is a biannual conference of nearly 400 people that provides practical tools, networking, and strategies for worker-owners, union members, technical assistance providers, community organizers, and scholars. We support an economy that utilizes cooperative and democratic organizational structures to support equitable systems for exchanging goods, services & products and stewardship of the commons for mutual benefit by all. We believe that democratic workplaces are the fundamental building blocks that power our work towards economic, social, and environmental justice and solidarity.

About the Location

Over the past several years, NYC has experienced an incredible growth in the number of worker cooperatives. On-the-ground organizing and a City Council funded initiative that has provided 5 million dollars toward co-op development over three years have led to a significant increase in the number of co-ops and an expanding array of support services. Therefore, it is an especially opportune moment to hold the ECWD in NYC this year, as many other cities around the the country begin campaigns with their own city councils.  We are lucky to partner with NYC Network of Worker Cooperatives which has been building a stronger worker cooperative community, and with Fordham University Law School’s Economic Development Clinic at their beautiful Lincoln Center campus to hold the conference in the heart of NYC.

Support Our Cause!

We aim to develop a conference that is affordable and accessible to as many people as possible. We plan to expand translation & interpretation, provide more convenient and engaging child care, and offer financial subsidies for those in need. Please consider an end-of-year donation! Businesses and organizations that donate qualify for our sponsorship recognition.

  2. As a scholar very interested in the new economy (wrote a book on it — free copy here: https://goo.gl/cpzkwl), I’m looking forward to this event! As Karl Marx understood, in order to build a new society, it’s necessary first and foremost to change the relations of production — to make them more cooperative and democratic. “New economy” activists are in the vanguard of the revolution.
