Worker Co-op Policy Advocate


As the Worker Cooperative Policy Advocate, you are responsible for engaging and maintaining excellent relationships with public agencies, elected officials, and candidates while coordinating the advocacy efforts of WCBDI and supporting the broader advocacy efforts of the worker cooperative movement.   You are entrepreneurial, driven, and deeply committed both to mission and to making sure that things that need to get done, are done. You will be part of a lean team, with an active board of passionate worker-owners and advocates for social and economic justice.

Responsibilities:
Coordinate Advocacy Efforts on Behalf of the Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative (WCBDI):

  • Collaborate with Public Relations consultant to manage relationships with City Council, ensuring regular meeting with key champions and meetings with city council members towards the discretionary funded initiative, WCBDI
  • Represent NYC NOWC and the WCBDI coalition of organizations effectively within all scheduled meetings
  • Coordinate scheduling of all meetings with city council and set-up of all logistical needs 
  • Identify, outreach to and prep worker owners and WBCDI organizations for City Council Meetings
  • Conduct timely follow-up post-meetings, addressing any needs/questions of City Council members
  • Serve as communications conduit with champion(s) and Council Finance as needed throughout the year 
  • Work with organizational partner to co-create advocacy materials (one pager, talking points, district maps,etc)
  • Attend weekly meetings as part of the backbone coordination of the coalition, providing support as needed
  • Attend monthly WCBDI meetings and lead in facilitation of agenda items related to advocacy for the initiative
  • Collaborate with PR consultant to research and identify next steps towards greater institutionalization of WCBDI, coordinating a subcommittee of WCBDI organizations for exploration of issue
  • Coordinate advocacy related events for WCBDI including annual Worker Cooperative fair for City Council
  • Support WCBDI partner organization in FY22 discretionary funding application process
  • Support data subcommittee towards goals for data collection to enhance advocacy efforts
  • Liaise with SBS through biweekly check-in meetings, typically 30-45 minutes in length
  • Troubleshoot all issues related to initiative advocacy that arise
  • Submit NYC NOWC lobbying reports in a timely manner

Support Broader Local Policy Efforts for Worker Cooperatives

  • Build and maintain excellent relationships with political candidates running for office in 2021
  • Represent NYC NOWC effectively in all meetings with candidates  
  • Work with NYC NOWC’s advocacy council to Inform and educate candidates on NYC NOWC’s new local policy platform with the aim of garnering concrete support for platform asks
  • Plan and coordinate special events including a candidate forum to connect candidates to worker cooperative community 
  • Collaborate with NYC NOWC’s Advocacy Council Coordinator to ensure representation of NYC NOWC’s advocacy council and/or other worker owners in all advocacy spaces
  • Collaborate with NYC NOWC staff to support monthly NYC Worker Cooperative Policy Committee meetings which bring together members of NYC NOWC’s advocacy council, other worker owners, worker cooperative support organizations, and allies 
  • Attend regular NYC NOWC staff meetings for coordination of the work
  • Possibility to grow into other policy work of the organization as desired

Qualifications

  • Three plus years of experience in advocacy and/or lobbying experience on behalf of communities
  • Experience in coordinating coalitions and/or city discretionary funding initiatives preferred
  • Highly organized and with strong attention to detail
  • Self starter, independent, flexible and a collaborative worker comfortable working in a team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communicator
  • English fluency a must; Spanish fluency a plus
  • Experience with worker-cooperatives a plus
  • Organizing experience a plus 
  • Experience with CiviCRM a plus

Membership Director

As the Membership Director, you are responsible for engaging with and supporting new and existing members of NYC NOWC. You are entrepreneurial, driven, and deeply committed both to mission and to making sure that things that need to get done, are done. We’re a nonprofit organization funded through an NYC City Council Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative (WCBDI). We deeply value nimbleness, initiative, creativity, intelligence, collaboration, and action. You will be part of a lean team, with an active board of passionate worker-owners and advocates for social and economic justice.
Responsibilities:
Membership & Recruitment: Work alongside The US Federation of Worker Cooperatives to:

  • Manage outreach to and recruitment of prospective member co-ops
  • Carry out regular site visits to current and prospective member cooperatives to assess and address needs, solicit member feedback on NYC NOWC’s services and direction, and manage mutual expectations
  • Coordinate with US Federation of Worker Cooperatives Membership Director on membership drives, on-boarding new members, and follow up with prospective members, including dues collection.

Support Membership

  • Coordinate Member Programs including the Coop Sustainability Fund, Principle 6 and Mentorship Programs
  • Identify member needs and develop programs to support them
  • Explore a pilot of health benefits for worker cooperatives in partnership with the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives
  • Field inquiries from membership on the hotline and email and provide initial consultations, info sessions for Spanish speaking startups and conversions
  • Respond to Spanish intake calls
  • Connect member cooperatives to relevant technical assistance providers, consultants, peer cooperatives, and other resources
  • Technical assistance and coaching for conflict resolution and other emergent coop needs

Track and report progress

  • Technical Assistance reporting to Small Business Services
  • Track support provided to each cooperative
  • Carry out regular impact reporting to board and funders, including New York City government
  • Track membership data and contact information with support with Communications Manager

Leadership Development

  • Support with Advocacy Council and Board Elections
  • Represent NYC NOWC membership with partners and allies 
  • Coordinate member participation in local and national worker cooperative conferences

Program Support

  • Support Program Director Coordinate annual membership meeting
  • Provide programming support at monthly programs

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Facilitate staff meetings on a rotating basis
  • Co-facilitate board meetings on a rotating basis and participate in staff and board committees 
  • Support with organizational fundraising
  • Support Coordinating director on administration of Subcontracting for Direct service provision to membership.

Qualifications

  • Highly organized and attention to detail
  • Self starter, independent, flexible and a collaborative worker comfortable working in a team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communicator
  • Comfort supporting individuals and groups through crisis
  • Loves proactively building community and individual relationships
  • English and Spanish fluency a must
  • Experience with worker-cooperatives a plus
  • Organizing experience a plus
  • Business/Marketing experience a plus 
  • Support with Conflict Transformation processes a plus
  • Experience with CiviCRM a plus
