Coop Intake Clinic with CUNY Law

NYC NOWC and the CUNY Community Economic Development Clinic invite you to an opportunity for 20 minute pro-bono meetings with lawyers to ask these questions.  After these short meetings, the clinic will either provide full representation or refer you to those who can support your group. 

Whether its incorporation or contracts, we know many cooperatives have a variety of legal questions and needs which may include:

  • Start up phase:
    • Entity choice, formation, and structuring
    • Basic tax considerations
    • Federal tax exemption
  • Existing coops:
    • Contract review including with entities (not negotiation)
    • Lease review (not negotiation)
    • Worker’s comp
    • Basic tax considerations
    • Membership Manuals
    • Basic Trademarking (no patents)
    • Dissolution (depends)
  • The clinic cannot support with the following needs:
    • Contract or lease negotiation
    • Intra-organization disputes
    • Patents

This clinic is free and available for up to (12 or 16) worker cooperatives that are based in NYC. Cooperatives should assign no more than 3 individuals to represent them during the intake meeting.  The lawyers will not be able to provide advice on business plans during these intakes.

Simultaneous translation will be available in English and Spanish. Though please note that only two slots per sessions can be made available for monolingual Spanish speakers. We may be in touch with a request to adjust your time slot if needed.

First come first serve with a final registration deadline of Weds Sept 21st. Confirmed scheduling and respective zoom links will be emailed by Mon Sept 26.
