Ha ve you met other worker-members in your industry? Have you thought of partn ering with other worker coops? Would your worker coop like to provide or pu rchase goods and services from other worker coops? Would you like to meet w orker-members at more mature worker cooperatives? Have you thought of mento ring worker-members at a startup?
How does a worker cooperative retain earnings? W hat does investment look like in a worker cooperative? How are profits dist ributed? What is the best way to approach growth from an equity standpoint? How can I guarantee that my worker cooperative continues to grow in the fu ture––and stays a worker cooperative?
How does representative democracy function in a worker coopera tive? How are board directors elected? What are the responsibilities of a d irector? How can I be sure that directors are making decisions in the inter est of my worker cooperative? What are the duties of care and loyalty? How does board governance differ from management? Can we elect non-members or o utsiders to the board of directors? Does my worker cooperative need a board of directors?
What is the Unite d States Federation of Worker Cooperatives? What is the New York City Netwo rk of Worker Cooperatives? How are they related? What do they do? And what have they done for my worker cooperative lately? How do worker cooperatives control these organizations? And how does my worker cooperative become a m ember?

Worker cooperatives came into being as socially conscious businesses to mutually benefit their workers and communi ties. Now\, these feel-good concepts are used with huge success by big busi nesses and tech start-ups-- from H&M targeting socially-minded shoppers wit h their ‘Conscious Collection’ to Airbnb promoting the ‘sharing economy’ (a nd nominating themselves for the Nobel Peace Prize.) So why do we continue to struggle with connecting with customers about our socially-minded point- of-difference?
In this workshop\, we will share with cooperat ive developers and worker-owners marketing concepts\, strategies and practi ces to drive home your business’s purpose-driven approach to potential cust omers and increase awareness (and sales!) We will explore scenarios\, pract ice thinking through and designing options\, and learn from successes and c hallenges.
We will explore marketing strategies that will help you to :
We will also spend some time reviewing a proposal for joint marketing efforts for the NYC Coop Community. From buying joint adds\, to creating discounts for members\, w e will explore ways we can strengthen our collective marketing efforts

Please save the date and circulate wi dely!
The ECWD is a biannual conf erence of nearly 400 people that provides practical tools\, networking\, an d strategies for worker-owners\, union members\, technical assistance provi ders\, community organizers\, and scholars. We support an economy that util izes cooperative and democratic organizational structures to support equita ble systems for exchanging goods\, services & products and stewardship of t he commons for mutual benefit by all. We believe that democratic workplaces are the fundamental building blocks that power our work towards economic\, social\, and environmental justice and solidarity.
This year’s conference theme of “Resist and Transform” f ocuses on the potential for the cooperative to be a tool for both resistanc e in these volatile times as well as a building block for transforming our economy and society. Proposals on history\, case-studies\, theory\, and pra ctical skills are all welcome.
How is your workplace dealin g with the current political climate? How are you planning for the future? What is important to your workplace or organization? To the movement local ly and beyond? To the sector(s) you operate in? What do we need to act on? How do you plan to grow your business in this environment? What skills can you share to grow the democratic ownership movement across boundaries?
< h1>About the LocationOver the past several years\, NYC has e xperienced an incredible growth in the number of worker cooperatives. On-th e-ground organizing and a City Council funded initiative that has provided 5 million dollars toward co-op development over three years have led to a s ignificant increase in the number of co-ops and an expanding array of suppo rt services. Therefore\, it is an especially opportune moment to hold the E CWD in NYC this year\, as many other cities around the the country begin ca mpaigns with their own city councils. We are lucky to partner with NYC Net work of Worker Cooperatives which has been building a stronger worker coope rative community\, and with Fordham University Law School’s Economic Develo pment Clinic at their beautiful Lincoln Center campus to hold the conferenc e in the heart of NYC.
We a im to develop a conference that is affordable and accessible to as many peo ple as possible. We plan to expand translation & interpretation\, provide m ore convenient and engaging child care\, and offer financial subsidies for those in need. Please consider an end-of-year donation! Businesses and orga nizations that donate qualify for our sponsorship recognition.

X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:Grave community violat ions like theft and sexual assault are unfortunately pervasive realities\, which even progressive and cooperative communities must address. The US Federation o f Worker Co-ops\, Democracy at Work Institute and NYC Network of Worker Coo peratives recognize the acute need for cooperative ecosystems to have the s kills\, support\, and analysis to violent cultures and elevate a culture of consent.
The workshop objectives are to:
· Ease participants in
to a Transformative Justice framework and p
rovide accessible tools for its theory and praxis. Have participants leave
with action steps\, individually and possibly as a group.
· Use partic
ipatory education tools to strengthen leadership skills related to accounta
bility work.
· Develop a robust analysis of “male supremacy” and “capi
talism” and its role in fueling violent cultures.
· Lay out the nuts a
nd bolts of doing “survivor support work” and “working with people who have
perpetrated assault.”
· Offer educational tools for cooperative leade
rs to popularize consent in progressive spaces\, including ongoing co-op ed
ucation on the culture of consent and healthy engagements with communities
with sex\, boundaries\, bodies and intimacy.
In recent years\, communities have garnered breathtaking momentum in building a movement for new frameworks of justice. Transformative Justice builds on the intentions of restorative justice\, and seeks a more fundamental change in mitigating alarming trends of the prison industrial complex and adequately addressing perpetrators and survivors of sexual assault\, intimate partner abuse\, an d other forms of violence.
Esteban Kelly of the US Federation of Work er Cooperatives (USFWC) and AORTA Co-op (Anti Oppression Resource & Trainin g Alliance) will guide a workshop where we will explore why we use transfor mative justice practice\, stories of how these practices have been used in the past\, and concrete tools we can use in our own communities.
Este ban Kelly is in a unique position to guide this workshop\, having worked on transformative justice and community accountability issues for 13 years as a facilitator at his worker co-op\, AORTA\, and especially as a volunteer member of the Philly Stands Up! Collective for 10 years.
Lunch and Sp anish/English Interpretation will be provided. Childcare can be provided up on request.

Immigrant-led worker cooperatives have been a successful tactic for migrant communities to build power\, build wealth\, and develop member-lead ers. However\, the recent political situation is a reminder that migrant wo rkers and other communities remain vulnerable to injustice and disempowerme nt. This is a call to action to extend protection and safety to all communi ties facing harassment and persecution in the workplace\, including all peo ple of color\, immigrants\, Muslims\, and people with disabilities. This se ssion will define what expanding s anctuary means\, how this strategy has been utilized over time to cr eate safe and hate-free spaces for everyone\, in particular\, those being p ersecuted for their immigration status. We will talk about how internal pol icies in worker cooperatives can help to fight against harassment in the wo rkplace\, thatś how we create Sanctuary workplaces as safe spaces. All or ganizations deal with conflict\, but in worker coops\, the challenges can s ometimes feel unique. Interpersonal issues\, misunderstandings\, lack of ac countability and trust\, and unchecked power and privilege within groups th at are striving for democracy can result in conflicts that are difficult to work through.
