Advocacy Council Application for 2019-20

NYC NOWC is launching our fourth advocacy council for 5 worker-owners who will lead NYC NOWC’s advocacy efforts. The goal of this program is to build advocacy skills among worker-owners in NYC for the long term and to expand the capacity of worker-owners to advocate on their own behalf.

Council members’ responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participation in the Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative which has received funding from NY City Council for the past four years.  Council members participate in Initiative meetings and help coordinate feedback from the rest of NYC NOWC’s membership.
  • Identifying NYC NOWC members’ needs to inform advocacy efforts
  • Research and Campaign Development for NYC NOWC’s city and state advocacy platforms.  The draft platform was put together by previous advocacy councils.
  • Participation in various local, state and national worker cooperatives and broader solidarity economy policy conversations
  • Assistance with member outreach for advocacy events and NYC NOWC programming

Members should expect to spend 100 hours working on Advocacy Council efforts throughout the year.  For their efforts, council members will receive an $18/hr stipend. Council members will also receive significant training and support from NYC NoWC staff and partners.

Advocacy council members will be supported in this process by previous members of the Advocacy Council, by NYC NOWC staff and through orientations and trainings about how city advocacy works, coop-related policy, the worker cooperative business development initiative, campaign development and other topics as needed.

We ask that all interested participants fill out this application.  The applications will be vetted by the NYC NOWC staff and board, and final leadership members will be decided on by the NYC NOWC membership.  We hope to develop a cohort that reflects the language, age and sector demographics of worker-owners in NYC.

The 2019-2020 Advocacy council will be supported by previous advocacy council members.  Applicants should know that after their first term is over, they have the opportunity to continue working with future advocacy councils with a continued stipend of the $18/hr rate.

Requirements:

  • Be a worker-owner of an operating worker cooperative in the NYC area.
  • Participate in all trainings and capacity building activities provided by the program, including an orientation in July,  and a series of trainings to be scheduled collectively based on participants’ availability
  • Be prepared to spend between approximately 50 – 100 hours on council efforts between July 2019 and June 2020.
